Council adjusted the RCMP staffing plan for the next five years, approving the hiring of one officer in October 2024 and another in 2027, revising the initial four-officer plan.
"The debate centered primarily on the timing and sequencing of adding new RCMP officers (N-054), balancing the desire for increased policing services against the resultant tax increase. Staff projections indicated that deferring the start of the 2024 officer until October and scheduling subsequent officers later would reduce the projected tax increase to 7.5%. Concerns were raised regarding potential future population growth (Lot 9/Erskine Lane) demanding more policing sooner than 2027/2028. Council also discussed whether the new Communications Coordinator could be funded by the Growing Communities Fund."

"Council accepted the inevitability of the e-comm levy and the RCMP building cost, but fiercely debated the two new staffing positions. Councillor Mattson and MacKenzie questioned the necessity and financial sustainability of the 800:1 pop-to-cop ratio, preferring to defer or eliminate the tax increase. The Municipal Employee position (N-053) was approved for a half-year start. Both motions regarding the RCMP member (N-054) failed due to 3-3 tie votes, postponing the decision."
