Letter dated November 25, 2020 from E. Dlabola, Victoria Bird Strike Initiative and W. English, Safe Wings Ottawa, Re: Bird Friendly Design Guidelines in View Royal

Council recommended referring the adoption of bird friendly design guidelines to the upcoming Official Community Plan review, while directing staff to seek options for incorporating such designs in new developments immediately.

"Staff suggested referring the matter to the OCP review to incorporate requirements into development permit areas. Council agreed this was the best long-term approach but expressed urgency, fearing bird deaths before the OCP review was complete. Councillor Mattson requested staff provide quick fixes or options (like patterned glass or exterior screens) for implementation in development permits for larger buildings in the short term."
Formal MotionPassed
"THAT the Committee recommend to Council that bird friendly design guidelines be referred to the Official Community Plan (OCP) process for consideration with the review of development permit areas; AND THAT options for incorporation of bird friendly design be considered for developments where possible in advance of that OCP review."
