Council considered a new bylaw to charge user fees for emergency services required at Thetis Lake Park due to reckless behavior or impairment, but ultimately referred it back to staff for further consultation with the CRD and legal clarification.
"The Fire Chief passionately argued for the bylaw, citing exhaustion with preventable accidents, injuries, and deaths caused by reckless behavior, especially involving drugs/alcohol. Council members questioned the legality of collection, the definition of reckless behavior (specifically the 'one metre jump' rule), and the public safety risk of deterring necessary calls for help. A motion to adopt the bylaw failed, and an alternate motion to refer it back to staff for major revisions was passed."
