Project Summary: FireSmart™ program

Financial Plan 2026-2030 N-113

Priority: Critical Public Engagement: Not applicable Project Number: 1-2-02110-201/203/590 CC210-06 Submitted by: Paul Hurst, Fire Chief Director: Paul Hurst, Fire protection

Executive Summary

In 2024 the Town applied for funding through the province and was approved to hire a FireSmart™ coordinator. The program has been a tremendous success in the community with significant benefits being realized. Additional funding has been approved to continue the program and maintain the staff position. Based on the success of the current program, it is anticipated that the grant will be approved.

Business problem and opportunity

View Royal, as with other Westshore communities, has a significant fire interface zone. The role of the coordinator is to identify hazards and mitigate through infrastructure and education. This program is recognized and supported provincially, and our coordinator has been working closely with other CRD communities on a region wide approach to forest fire management.

Proposed project objectives

Continue the work underway in 2026

Business risks

Non-approval of the grant application will result in a loss of funds from the province and the work initiated will cease. This will also result in the layoff of the coordinator.
