Letter from Amalgamation Yes Re: Amalgamation in the Capital Region

Dear Mayor and Councilors,

As you may be aware the Capital Region Municipal Amalgamation Society (also known as Amalgamation Yes) was incorporated recently. The purpose of the Society is to "achieve more effective and accountable governance within the Capital Region through municipal amalgamation."

For many years, the issue of amalgamation in the Capital Region has been discussed and debated. The current objective of Amalgamation Yes is to afford the taxpayers in each municipality in the capital regions the opportunity to vote on whether they support reducing the number of municipalities in the region through amalgamation. The society is currently collecting signatures on petitions requesting such a vote. One of those petitions is to the Town of View Royal requesting that the Council agree to put a question on amalgamation before the voters. In the near future we will be holding meetings throughout the Capital Region to discuss amalgamation with the public. One of those meetings may be held in View Royal.

Sometime in the future, Amalgamation Yes intends to present the petition signed by voters in View Royal to the Council and request that a non-binding question on amalgamation be put on the ballot as part of the 2014 municipal election.
