Wild ARC – Avian and Mammal Pen Capital Repairs
Dear Jeannie,
Thank you again, so much, for the Town of View Royal’s support of the BC SPCA’s Wild ARC and our work to rescue and rehabilitate wild animals on southern Vancouver Island. As requested in the grant agreement for the $500 gift generously made by View Royal, please accept this letter as a final report for our Avian and Mammal Pen Capital Repairs project.
Evaluation of the project
As proposed in our application, the required maintenance has been completed to the avian enclosures, the aspect of the project supported by View Royal, and our birds are now better accommodated. All damages, due to time, exposure and use, have been repaired and new screening has been added to minimize the chance of escape by our patients. As well, the pens have been thoroughly rat-proofed, to eliminate possible predation.
Number of participants in the project
The design and execution of the project was led by contractor and friend of Wild ARC, Pierre Kouba, Wild ARC rehabilitator, Troy Blondin, and Wild ARC volunteer, Edward Rekart.
Evaluation of direct and indirect benefits to the Town
With approximately 1,725 birds admitted to Wild ARC annually, and that number increasing each year, our avian pens are critical to rehabilitation efforts. More than 550 birds will spend their recovery in the new renovated enclosures, preparing them for release into the wild. Based on intake numbers in the past years, at least 15 of these birds will from the Town of View Royal and will benefit from your investment in the welfare of View Royal's wildlife.
Financial statement of actual revenue and expenses
To date, all avian pens, including activities supported by the Town of View Royal, have been completed. As the entire project contained in our application also included mammal pens, the budget below will reflect that work on the third and largest mammal pen will be completed in the fall when there are less patients in our care to disturb. Remaining projects funds will be held until that time.
In regards to revenue, in addition to this grant of $500 from the Town of View Royal, the District of Saanich has contributed $2,500 and applications to a number of other municipalities are still pending.
