A resident proposal requesting the construction of a sidewalk along specific blocks of View Royal Avenue for public safety.
To: Mayor and Council of View Royal
Input to View Royal Official Community Plan
The following presents a proposal that consideration be given to the construction of a sidewalk along certain sections of View Royal Avenue where there is sufficient room to do so. In particular, attention is drawn to that section of the roadway in the 300 and 400 blocks between Beaumont and Heddle streets.
This proposal is based on the following observations:
a) the regular vehicle traffic flow along the avenue has steadily increased in volume over time, and b) pedestrian traffic has likewise increased very substantially along the avenue and includes family groups, dog walkers and individuals.
As a result of the interactions between these two traffic flows it is not unusual to see pedestrians moving to the grass, or bare earth, verge to avoid oncoming vehicles. Nor is it uncommon that drivers stop to allow passage of oncoming traffic that has moved out of lane to avoid pedestrians. In short, neither actions by pedestrians and/or drivers lend themselves to a concept of community well-being.
The proposed sidewalk would help alleviate this situation and allow the pedestrian traffic to again enjoy the safety and security of what is valued by members of the community as a very pleasant neighbourhood walk.
In closing, it is perhaps a redundancy to note that other roadways in the vicinity, Old Island Highway and Helmcken, have very adequate sidewalks. Presumably these were installed as public safety measures to reflect traffic flows
Thank you for your consideration of this proposal.
