Letter from Mayor Goodmanson, City of Langford, Re: Ukraine Fundraising Activities

RE: City of Langford Request for Collaboration to Support Vancouver Island Supports the Ukraine Fundraising Activities

At its Regular Meeting held Monday, August 19th, 2024, the City of Langford Council passed the following resolution:

THAT Council direct staff to send a letter to the West Shore municipalities of Colwood, Highlands, Metchosin, and View Royal to seek interest in collaborating to support Vancouver Island Supports the Ukraine in their fundraising activities supporting the Ukraine;

AND

That Council direct staff to work with VISU to explore establishing a Friendship City agreement with one of the Ukraine municipalities of Horohiv, Boratyn, Olyka, Kamin-Kashyrsk, and Kivertsy either individually or as a collaboration with one or more of the West Shore municipalities.

AND THAT

Council consider contributing $5000.00 annually in support of the Ukraine through the Friendship City program through the City of Langford’s Financial Plan.

Many of our municipalities locally have provided monetary support to the philanthropic organization Vancouver Island Supports the Ukraine. Recently, Langford received correspondence from the City of Colwood asking for Council to consider working in collaboration with them in order to provide formalized support to the Ukraine in the form of a Friendship City Agreement. Vancouver Island Supports the Ukraine continues to undertake vital work within the Ukraine and this cause remains at the forefront of many community members minds.

As our staff prepare a Friendship City Agreement in partnership with Vancouver Island Supports the Ukraine, we are extending this invitation to the Town of View Royal to join the City’s of Colwood and Langford in this important endeavour. Our support will go further if we are able to partner together.
