Assignment

Write a tree protection plan to prevent the proposed deck construction from impacting the health and safety of the subject tree.

Observations, discussion, conclusions and recommendations.

1. The Garry oak appears to be in good health excepting a scarred structural limb showing signs of decay (see photo on page 2). It would be prudent to have an arborist climb the tree and determine if the limb can be safely retained, or if it should be pruned or removed entirely.
2. The root system of the tree extends well beyond its canopy. Its critical root zone (CRZ) has a calculated radius of 11 m. The deck will be constructed close in to the tree within this CRZ. To prevent damage to the root system there must be no excavation or ground disturbance inside the CRZ. The accompanying sketch plan shows how the roots will be protected by a layer of crushed rock deep enough to provide support for the deck construction and still allow for gas exchange to and from the roots. Spaces between the deck planks will allow rain to reach the roots.

In my opinion, if the recommendations on the sketch plans are competently implemented, the tree will remain in good health and have a safe useful life expectancy. Please call the writer with any questions, or if you need further information.
