Victoria Children's Choir tour through the Netherlands
April / May 2015
"Bridging Generations"
The Victoria Children's Choir (VCC) is planning to conduct a two-week concert tour through the Netherlands between April 23 and May 7, 2015. These dates have been chosen to allow this tour to coincide with celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadians and the start of an unprecedented period of peace in western Europe.
The positive legacy of these historic events continues to this day. The annual floral explosion of spring's colours from tulips in Ottawa and the frequent sounding of the Carillion outside the Royal BC Museum, a centenary donation by Dutch immigrants, is a testament to the significant Dutch component of our Canadian Heritage. In Europe the national boundaries that used to divide have given way to a union of diverse cultures and unprecedented freedom of movement. There is much to celebrate.
Tour Objectives
The choir will have the opportunity to perform to an enthusiastic and appreciative public, and is especially honoured to have been invited to participate in some of the official national celebrations. Perfomances have also been requested at churches and schools. A second objective of the tour is to let the choristers meet children of their own age in the Netherlands, join them in their festivities and daily lives and get a flavour of what it is like to live and go to school in that country. The choristers will moreover be exposed to noteworthy historical civic and cultural facets of this country which in spite of its small size has had a world-wide impact. A third objective is to let the VCC help the Dutch celebrate the coming of age of the Canada and its army. It for the first time operated as a national force under Canadian command, built hundreds of bridges over the rivers, canals and ditches of this landscape. Those are now all gone but the bridge of friendship is everlasting.
