Rat Runners

January 12, 2015

To Mayor and Council,

This morning January 12, 2015 whilst on a day off I had an appointment in Victoria. I attempted to leave just a few minutes after 7 AM the plan to go up the Stormont Hill to Island Hwy and follow into town. There was a constant stream of traffic left turning from Helmcken Road onto Rudyard Road, blowing thru the stop sign at Stormont Road and then roaring up the hill towards the lights at Island Highway. A normally 5 to 10 second maneuver to exit my driveway turned into 5 minutes, otherwise risk a motor vehicle collision between myself and the traffic roaring up the hill.

I know Town Hall seems to think the re-opening of the Craigflower Bridge would solve this problem and has dismissed the concerns. Clearly however the new bridge has not altered any driver behaviors nor is the no left sign at Helmcken/Rudyard any deterrent given it is being ignored.

My route took me onto Admirals Road over the new bridge towards Gorge Road. I noticed that save for a couple of Transit Buses, there was little traffic on Admirals heading for the intersection of Craigflower/Admirals.

This "Rat Running" situation has been going on for far longer than it should have. I believe somewhere I have photos taken about ten years ago when the complaint was first made. This is a wholly unacceptable situation. Aside from the stress caused, I should not have to risk injury or property damage by simply attempting to exit my property on what should be a residential street, not a main thoroughfare.

I expect some consideration be given to this problem towards a resolution.

Respectfully,

Rick Plesnik
