Standing Committee Membership - Councillor MacKenzie

A motion seeking to introduce guiding principles for diversity in committee appointments failed, with opponents citing the Mayor's prerogative for standing committees.

"Councillor MacKenzie advocated strongly for implementing guiding principles on inclusivity and diversity for all committee appointments, including Standing Committees. The Mayor and other Councillors opposed the motion, citing that selecting Standing Committee members is the Mayor's prerogative under the Community Charter and worried the motion would fetter the Mayor's discretion or be impractical given low volunteer rates. The motion was defeated."
Formal MotionFailed

Standing Committee Membership - Councillor MacKenzie

"Councillor MacKenzie argued that the recently appointed Standing Committee lacked diversity (e.g., 50% from the same neighborhood, single woman, similar viewpoints). Debate centered on the balance between actively recruiting diverse perspectives and appointing qualified volunteers, especially given the rapid formation required for the housing legislation committee. Mayor Tobias and other Council members expressed support for the principle going forward, but noted difficulties in volunteer recruitment."
Formal MotionPassed
"THAT the Committee recommend to Council that staff develop best practices to assist with the Mayor's selection of standing committee members to ensure a diverse representation of neighbourhoods, demographics, and perspectives."
