Arborists’ Report – Davey Tree Service

Further to my site visit the following are my findings and recommendations with respect to the Garry oak in your back yard you had concerns over.

The oak is approximately 30cm DBH with a main stem to 12m and is reasonably mature. It is growing from the same root plane as another oak of approximately 45cm DBH. The growth pattern of this tree is with a heavy lean of more than 45 degrees extending horizontally over the lawn area. The tree has a very small canopy area established at the last 3m of the main stem and is approximately 3 m over the lawn. Due to this the tree has every likelihood to fail entirely in the future. The foliar growth was fair considering its lack of volume.

It is my understanding a new addition to the residence is planned and the construction perimeter will be within and touching the canopy of this tree. While this will have no effect on the critical root zone of the tree, I would estimate that 50% of the canopy would have to be removed to accommodate the building.

Recommendation:

No remedial pruning can be accomplished due to the lack of canopy. The concern of the tree failing entirely from the root flair and damaging another oak is highly likely.

It is therefore my professional opinion that this oak be removed prior to construction starting on this site to avoid any possible damage or liabilities in the future.
