West Shore Police Report - January 2013

A review of crime statistics and trends based on calls for service for the month of January 2013 for West Shore saw a small decrease of -2% over the previous year and month. Statistics of crime occurrences of interest are included, covering Crime Against the Person, Crime Against Property, Traffic Offences and Other Offences and Occurrences. Also included are the statistics for Domestic Violence and those files captured under the Mental Health Act, as those files can be a significant drain on resources.

Crime Against the Person

"Total" files were down 19% from the previous year for the month and the "Actual" files were down 6%. "Actual" assaults for January 2013 were down 24% from January 2012. "Actual" Robbery and Weapons Offence files remained unchanged at 0 while there was an increase in Sex Offence files (1 vs. 5) for the same month and previous year. The cleared file success rate was high for Crimes Against the Person for 2012, with the expectation that as the investigations are completed the cleared numbers and clearance rates for 2013 will increase.

Crime Against Property

"Total" and "Actual" files increased for the month by 19% and 61% respectively. "Actual" Break and Enter to Businesses remained unchanged from the previous year and month, while Break and Enter to Residence and to Other were down 40% and 67% respectively. Theft of Motor Vehicle and Theft from Motor Vehicle were up 67% (3 vs. 5) and 248% (21 vs. 73) respectively. The high spike in Theft from Vehicle is most likely attributed to a few select prolific offenders and will vary from month to month depending on incarceration levels. Due to the recent high spike, West Shore detachment is working closely with the Regional Crime Unit to maximize resources. The southern region as a whole has been hit hard by property crime in the last couple months. The Property Crime Map provided enables the detachment to identify certain areas and prolific offenders in those areas for targeted enforcement. Shoplifting was down by 14% for the month and there were no "Actual" Arsons reported.

Traffic

Non-Fatal Crashes resulting in injury were down by 11% for the month. This statistic would certainly be affected by weather conditions and the variation from year to year would reflect this. "Actual" Impaired operation of a motor vehicle was up for the month by 50% (6 vs. 9) compared to January 2012.

Other Offences & Occurrences

"Actual" Cause Disturbance occurrences decreased by 38% over the previous month and year. Drug related offences were down other than Drug Trafficking but again, these numbers fluctuate with targeted enforcement.

Mental Health Act and Domestic Violence

Mental Health Act files were down 10% and Domestic Violence files were down 29% from January 2012.
