Mayor’s Report for the Month of August 2014

This report is intended as a quick update, with a more detailed report to be provided quarterly. The West Shore RCMP Detachment received 1669 calls for service in August. During this same period in 2013 there were 1746 total calls for service in August. Distribution of these calls is itemized for your reference below:

Calls for Service Statistics August 2013/2014

During the months of June, July and August the Community Policing Section attended popular parks in the West Shore area on foot, bike and boat. These patrols were spread out between all municipalities and included attendance to areas as requested by the community such as Lone Tree Park in the Highlands. Members and Auxiliary Constables also attended special community events such as the Western Speedway Touch a Truck display, the Langford Show and Shine, Canada Day at Fort Rodd Hill, along with educational events where officers presented on bike safety to campers at the Goldstream Campground.

There have been several events hosted throughout West Shore to raise funds for our own S/Sgt Stephen Wright who will be riding in the Tour de Rock which kicks off on Saturday, September 20 including a BBQ/ Head Shaving event hosted by the City of Langford on June 18th which raised over $3000, a garage sale in front of the Detachment on August 23rd where we raised over $5000 and a bottle drive in Sooke over the Labour Day weekend which raised an additional $2400 bringing our grand total to date at just under $15000 to support pediatric cancer research.

We are pleased to report that the 2014 Rock the Shores Concert which spanned 3 days this year from July 11-13 was a successful event for both concert attendees and police alike. Police made 17 arrests; 15 for being intoxicated in public, 1 for an outstanding warrant and 1 for breach of probation offence. These numbers were consistent with the numbers from the 2013 event where 12 arrests were made over a 2 day period. West Shore RCMP did not note any negative effects of the open alcohol concept and all situations that police responded to were consistent with an event of this size. We look forward to working with Colwood for next year’s event to ensure continued success.

Some files of note for the months of July and August:

• All municipalities have reported several incidents of bicycles being stolen form parking lots, storage sheds, complainant’s yards etc.
• Colwood: A report of 2 people in the water after their canoe tipped over, a father and son had taken their canoe to check a crab trap approx. 250m from shore when it overturned. A Navy vessel in the area launched their zodiac and brought both individuals aboard for medical attention.
• Langford: A female cyclist was hit on the back of the head and pulled off her bicycle when someone attempted to steal her backpack. The suspect stole the victim’s mountain bike described as a white Reebok mountain bike. The victim suffered an injury to her face and leg as a result of the attack. The only description of the suspect the victim could provide was that he had dark hair.
• Langford: A male and female entered the store and removed the lock from the air gun display. The female stood guard while the male removed a black Crossman T4 semi-auto CO2 air-pistol. The air-pistol looks like an actual pistol to the untrained eye.
• Colwood: Colwood Dental Office was broken into, point of entry was through a window next to the front door, the safe was targeted and was dragged through the office and out the front door. Safe believed to only contain a small amount of drugs.
• View Royal: The back door of a work vehicle pried open, significant number of tools taken, including a full canister of welding nitrogen and acetylene.
• Langford: A report of fishing line strung across a trail near Langford Lake located tied to a foot bridge near the .5 km marker. Another report of fishing line strung across Hull Road at Jenkins Avenue. Police located over 100 feet of fishing line that had been removed from Glen Lake Road by a concerned citizen. A similar situation was also reported to Victoria Police Department.
• Langford: West Shore RCMP Police dog handler and his dog responded to a call of a distraught male on the trestle bridge in Goldstream park. Vancouver Island RCMP Negotiator team and the Langford Fire and Rescue were subsequently called to assist and fortunately were able to assist the male who walked off the bridge on his own accord and was then taken to the hospital for care.
