The purpose of the assessment was to evaluate two Douglas fir trees located at the front of the unit for safety.

The trees measure 58cm and 70cm in diameter and stand approximately 80 feet tall.

58cm Douglas fir: The tree stands within 2-3 feet of the roof line at the front right of the unit. The growth is poor and the canopy is sparse indicating that the tree is under stress. The tree shows signs of previous limb failure through branch stubs on the trunk. The tree has a 5% lean. The tree has been previously topped. The roots are lifting the asphalt creating a tripping hazard.

70cm Douglas fir: The tree has poor growth and a sparse canopy also. The tree shows signs of previous limb failure. The root collar is buried which can encourage root decay and lower trunk rot (the trunk was not tested for decay). The tree was previously topped.

Staff Recommendation

Although the trees do not pose any significant safety concerns, they are showing signs of stress and decline. The trees pose more of a maintenance threat through limb failure and roots causing structural damage. The trees are too close to the building and were likely damaged during construction. In my opinion the trees should be removed due to the fact that they are beginning to cause major damage and are too close to the building.
