On John's behalf, as requested in the meeting Monday night below is a breakdown of the $11,000 maintenance costs requested by Lifecycles:
Lawn Care - $2,500
- $2,200 - lawn cutting 22 times/yr @ $20/hr
- $300 - weed whacking 3 times/yr @ $20/hr
Tree Care - $3,350
- $1,200 - winter pruning 40 hrs @ $30/hr
- $600 - summer pruning 20 hrs @ $30/hr
- $250 - chipper rental
- $1,000 - harvest (coordinate, process, distribute)
- $500 - organic disease & pest management
Park Management - $1,450
- $250 - tree fencing maintenance
- $200 - irrigation maintenance
- $400 - infrastructure maintenance
- $250 - tool upgrades
- $350 - transportation costs
Community Programming - $3,500 *
- $3,000 - coordination 100 hrs @ $30/hr
- $500 - Food for volunteers
Results of Community Programming
- 22 community workbees (2/mo x 11 mo) = $15,000 in-kind value (1,000 volunteer hrs @ $15/hr)
- workbees include weeding & garden bed maintenance, mulching fruit trees, fencing and pathway maintenance, pruning, grafting, tree cataloguing, pest and disease prevention, design implementation, irrigation maintenance
- 4 free community workshops, plus an edible mushroom workshop
- two sessions - pruning 101
- two sessions - grafting 101
- partners in workbees and skillshares include Greater Victoria Green Team (two work parties in March & April), Camosun College Horticulture Program (learn about pruning and help prune the orchard) and GRAFT (Grafting Regionally Adapted Fruit Trees) will be coming to educate the community about fruit tree grafting and propagation in order to preserve some of the rare varieties that Rex Welland planted
- will be reaching out to community groups and schools throughout the year to reach volunteer targets
Below is what they figure is a breakdown of additional costs to Lifecycles to manage the park:
Lifecycles wages required:
- 10 hours/week @ $30/hour for 52 weeks/year = $15,600.00
- 1,000 hours of community volunteer hours (work bees) - 1,000 X $15/hr = $15,000.00 of in-kind support to offset the maintenance budget
