Mayor's Report for the Month of March 2015

This report is intended as a quick update, with a more detailed report to be provided quarterly. The West Shore RCMP Detachment received 1497 calls for service in March. During this same period in 2014 there were 1319 total calls for service in March. Distribution of these calls is itemized for your reference below:

On March 4th, 2015 West Shore RCMP are currently investigating what appears to be a random attack that occurred at around 7:00 pm on March 3rd, 2015 on a walking trail, near Glen Lake in Langford, B.C. The victim, a 23 year old Langford woman was running on the trail, off of Shoreview Drive, when she came across a man who asked her for the time. She was then knocked unconscious before she was robbed of her cellphone and money.

West Shore RCMP, along with West Shore Police Dog Service (PDS) responded and met with the victim and other witnesses.

West Shore RCMP Major Crime Unit continues to actively investigate this file.

On March 6th, 2015 West Shore RCMP are actively investigating a series of fraudulent purchases, using fake $50 Canadian bills reported between March 1st and March 3rd, 2015 in Langford and Sooke, B.C.

In those five occurrences, the same fake $50 bill with the same serial number (AHT9461314) was passed.

1. The first incident occurred at Fairway Market in Langford (March 1st)
2. The second incident occurred at Wendy's restaurant (March 1st)
3. The third incident occurred at Western Foods in Langford (March 3rd)
4. The fourth incident occurred at Costco in Langford (March 3rd)
5. A fifth incident occurred at Western Foods in Sooke (March 3rd)

West Shore RCMP Financial Crime investigator is also assisting with the investigation. Investigators are examining video surveillance from the different establishment in hope to identify any suspects.

On March 9th, 2015 On March 8th, 2015 at approximately 15:49 hours, West Shore RCMP attended a single motor vehicle crash on Veterans Memorial Parkway and Meadford Road in Langford. A 1993 pickup truck being driven by a 68 year old Langford resident was proceeding south bound on Veterans Memorial Parkway when he went off road right striking a tree. The male was rushed from the scene but died at the hospital a short time later. His 59 year old female passenger, who lives in Colwood, suffered numerous internal injuries and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. A witness who was following the truck observed the driver suffer an apparent medical emergency while he was driving and it was believed he passed out behind the wheel. The female passenger attempted to take control of the vehicle from the passenger side but failed to prevent the vehicle from leaving the travel portion of the road way. Veterans Memorial Parkway was closed to south bound traffic while police gathered evidence.

On March 9th, 2015 West Shore RCMP continue to investigate a rash of theft from vehicles and break and enters to sheds in Metchosin. The incidents occurred in the middle of the night on March 9th and were in the area of La Bonne Rd and Jelinek Pl. The suspect(s) targeted unlocked vehicles as well as unlocked sheds. Electronic items were stolen.

In one case, a home owner stated he woke up to find someone in the hallway of his suite. As the home owner chased the suspect, he claims the suspect fired one shot from a pellet or air soft gun at him. The home owner was not injured.

On March 13th, 2015 Two West Shore RCMP members suffered fume inhalation while responding to a medical call on Volmer Rd in Colwood.

At approximately 12:54 hours, West Shore RCMP responded to a male in a closed garage with a vehicle running. West Shore RCMP officers responded immediately, forced their way in and were able to drag the male out and save him.

As a result of the rescue, the two officers were exposed to carbon monoxide and had to be transported to the hospital for treatment.

Both members have made a full recovery and are back on active duty.

The West Shore Detachment has been busy with numerous files and creating the Annual Performance Plan for the upcoming year.
