DETAIL: BOULEVARD TREE PLANTING

  1. DO NOT CUT LEADER.
  2. SET TREE TOP DEAD TREE WITH TWO VERTICAL CONNECTING BANDS. TREE TO BE TREATED ACCORDING TO THE STAKES BELOW GRADE. STAKES TO BE POSITIONED PARALLEL TO STREET FOR STREET TREES OR TO PREVAILING WIND. STAKES NOT TO PENETRATE OR DAMAGE ROOT BALL.
  3. SECURE TREE WITH ARBOR TIE TREE TIE MATERIAL OR EQUAL. TIE IN FIGURE EIGHT PATTERN AND ATTACH TO STAKES WITH SWINGLE NAILS.
  4. AFTER SETTLEMENT, TOP OF THE ROOT BALL TO BE FLUSH WITH SURROUNDING GRADE. FINISHED GRADE OF PLANTING BED TO BE EQUIVALENT TO CROWN OF TREE.
  5. CREATE A 50MM DEEP WELL IN GROWING MEDIUM FOR THE FIRST YEAR OF WATERING. ENSURE WELL IS A CLEAN EDGED CIRCLE WITH A DIAMETER OF 750MM.
  6. PLACE MULCH, 75MM MIN. DEPTH, OVER THE PLANTING WELL. KEEP MULCH BACK FROM TRUNK A MINIMUM DISTANCE OF 100MM.
  7. NEW SOD PLANTED ON 100MM MIN. OF GROWING MEDIUM. REFER TO SPECIFICATIONS.
  8. 450MM DEEP ROOT DEFLECTION BARRIER (UB18-2 OR APPROVED EQUAL) PLACED AGAINST BACK OF CURB AND ALONG EDGE OF SIDEWALK TO FINISH 10MM ABOVE FINISHED MULCH SURFACE. REFER TO MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS.
  9. ASPHALT ROADWAY WITH CONCRETE CURB.
  10. PLANTING HOLE DEPTH TO BE 50MM OR EQUAL TO THE HEIGHT OF THE ROOT BALL, WHICHEVER IS GREATER. PLANTING HOLE EDGE TO BE A SHALLOW ANGLE. SCARIFY SIDES AND BOTTOM OF TREE PRIOR TO PLANTING.
  11. REMOVE STRAPPING, CUT ALL BINDING MATERIAL AND FOLD BURLAP INTO HOLE PRIOR TO BACKFILLING. PLANT BASE ROOT IF REQUIRED.
  12. ENSURE A MINIMUM OF 300MM DEPTH OF COMPACTED SUBGRADE UNDERNEATH FOOTBALL TO PREVENT SETTLING OF TREE.

  1. All landscaping works shall meet or exceed the requirements outlined in the latest edition of the B.C. Landscape Standard, as jointly published by the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects (BCSLA) and the British Columbia Nursery Trades Association (BCNTA). In the event of a conflict between the landscape standard and specifications, contract documents, then the BC Landscape Standard shall apply.
  2. The Landscape contractor shall visit the site and become familiar with all existing conditions and potential constraints before submitting their bid. No extra compensation will be granted for any work or materials required due to existing conditions. The Contractor is responsible for all subsurface utilities and shall report any to the Landscape Architect.
  3. The Contractor shall maintain the site in a safe and tidy condition, take precautions necessary for the protection of public, and provide all necessary safety devices, including, but not limited to, signage and alert people about and water on the site.
  4. The Contractor shall maintain full supervision by experienced and qualified staff on site at all times. All work shall be performed by skilled tradespeople according to recognized standards of workmanship.
  5. Traffic control shall be the responsibility of the Contractor and shall comply with Section 122 of the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act and the Ministry of Transportation's Traffic Control Manual for Work on B.C. Public Roads. Traffic is to be maintained, as described in the Ministry of Transportation's traffic management policy. The contractor shall maintain and provide access for all residents at all times. The contractor shall coordinate with the General Contractor on work in the boulevard.
  6. The landscape contractor shall be responsible for setting out the work in accordance with the plans and specifications. Any discrepancies between the site and the plans shall be reported to the Landscape Architect before work begins.
  7. The Landscape Architect shall be notified 48 hours in advance of any work starting on site.
  8. The contractor shall be responsible for all costs incurred by any work or material required that is not shown on the plans or described in the specifications.
  9. All work performed by the Landscape Contractor shall be guaranteed for a period of one (1) year from the date of Total Performance.
  10. The contractor shall not use any plant materials, inspection from on site or near sites that could be considered a nuisance to the neighbors or the general public.
  11. Debris, roots, stumps, stones, building material, contaminated subsoil, and weeds shall be removed from the site.
  12. Any areas disturbed by construction shall be restored to its original condition or better.
  13. Subgrade shall be scarified to a minimum depth of 150mm immediately before placing growing medium.
  14. All trees and shrubs shall be of the species and size specified on the plant list. All plants shall be of first-class quality, healthy, and vigorous.
  15. All plant material to be supplied by Nursery Trades Association and Landscape Architect prior to installation.
  16. Substitutions of plant material shall not be permitted without written approval.
  17. Any substitutions approved shall be of similar character and size as specified.
  18. Plant materials shall be handled with care to prevent damage. All plants shall be kept in their containers or balled and burlapped until ready for planting. Root balls shall be kept moist at all times.
  19. Planting shall not be conducted when soil or weather conditions are unsuitable.
  20. All beds shall be excavated to a depth of 300mm and filled with approved growing medium. All shrub and groundcover beds shall be mulched with a minimum of 75mm of bark mulch.
  21. All plants shall be inspected for quality...
