Mayor’s Report for the Month of January 2015

This report is intended as a quick update, with a more detailed report to be provided quarterly. The West Shore RCMP Detachment received 1496 calls for service in January. During this same period in 2014 there were 1356 total calls for service in January. Distribution of these calls is itemized for your reference below:

Calls for Service Statistics January 2014/2015

Community Policing Section spent January starting up the DARE program at several of the schools in the West Shore area. This is a 10 week program aimed at students in grades 4, 5 and 6 where RCMP officers help teach the students to make responsible life choices; including how to deal with peer pressure and negative influences such as tobacco and alcohol.

Some files of note for the month of January, as per Media releases from the West Shore RCMP newsroom:

On January 14th, 2015 at 5:15 pm West Shore RCMP received a report from BC Ambulance Service that they were responding to a victim of a stabbing near Jacklin Road and Station Avenue. West Shore RCMP attended to the scene and located a 21 year old male with a severe stab wound to his leg. The victim succumbed to his injuries.

On January 15th at approximately 3:00am Victoria Police arrested a male in connection with this stabbing. He was charged with manslaughter. Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) continue to investigate the incident.

On January 19th, 2015 at approximately 7:40 am, West Shore RCMP received a report of a pedestrian that was hit by what is described as a white Ford F250 with cabinets on the side.

The pedestrian was initially crossing Peatt Road on the cross walk when the truck that was turning left onto Peatt from Goldstream struck him with his drive side mirror. The driver of the truck did not stop to verify if the pedestrian was okay. The pedestrian attended Victoria General Hospital to be checked for a minor shoulder injury.

On January 20th, 2015 a cyclist was riding on Matson Road towards Goldstream Avenue when he heard a vehicle approaching him from behind. The cyclist, who was wearing dark clothes and carrying a flashlight was struck by the vehicle. The cyclist suffered a broken jaw and a concussion. He sought medical attention on his own and was discharged.

West Shore RCMP continue to seek eye witnesses to the incident. Cst Alex Berube, spokesperson for West Shore RCMP "Luckily the cyclist was wearing a helmet which most likely reduced the level of his injuries. We remind cyclists that they must have a front and back visible light when riding at night as well as reflective clothing. Be seen. Be safe."

On January 27th, 2015 at 8:30pm West Shore RCMP received a 911 call reporting a male had been shot. West Shore officers attended to a residence in the 2600 Block of Sooke Road and located a male inside the residence with gunshot wounds.

BC Ambulance transported the male to the hospital where he remains in serious condition. Subsequently a 22 year old Victoria resident was arrested without incident by the Saanich Police acting on a tip. Police also arrested a 21 year old male Saanich resident suspected to be an accessory after the fact.

Sooke Road was closed for a period of time between Happy Valley Road and Jacklin Road for the purposes of the investigation.
