West Shore RCMP Mayor’s Report for the Month of December 2014

Some files of note for the month of December, as per Media releases from the West Shore RCMP newsroom:

Between December 11th and 16th, 2014, West Shore RCMP received 11 reports of theft from motor vehicles. The thefts occurred in Langford, Colwood and View Royal. Some of the vehicles were forcefully broken into, whereas other vehicles were simply left unlocked. Stolen items ranged from Navigation Systems (GPS), to cellphones and golf bags. No suspects have been identified at this point in time.

Cst. Alex BERUBE, spokesperson of the West Shore RCMP: "We continue to urge the public to remove all valuables inside of their vehicles while unattended and to remove packages that may attract attention of thieves. We also remind the public to always lock all of their vehicle doors - it only takes seconds to steal items from your car. We are asking the public to be vigilant, especially at this busy time of the year."

On December 18th, 2014 at 6:00 PM, West Shore RCMP was requested to assist the View Royal Fire Department for a chemical spill outside of a residence in the 1500 block of Middle Rd on the Songhees Nation land, which is leased out to a mobile home park. West Shore RCMP, View Royal Fire Department and CRD HazMat are currently on scene investigating the incident. A perimeter was established to secure the area. 12 homes were evacuated. Displaced residents were dealt with by Emergency Social Services at a reception centre located at the Juan de Fuca 55+ Senior Centre.

December 21st, 2014, A Saanich man faces criminal charge of Possession of Stolen Property, Breach of Recognizance after being intercepted on a routine traffic stop.

At around 9:30 PM, A West Shore RCMP member conducted a traffic stop on a blue Yamaha Scooter in Langford after the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. Investigation revealed the scooter was stolen. The driver, who displayed a strong odour of liquor, was taken into custody where he was held for court. The man, who is well known to police, was bound by conditions to abstain from possessing or consuming alcohol. He was also issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act.

On December 25, 2014, at approximately 3:20 AM, West Shore RCMP and View Royal Fire department received a report of a rollover collision in the 300 block of Six Mile Rd in View Royal. The female driver and male passenger were initially trapped in their Jeep Cherokee but were subsequently able to escape from the wreckage. They were then taken to hospital and were discharged shortly after. They did not sustain injuries.

The female driver was taken into custody and is now facing charges of impaired driving as the alcohol level in her body was close to two times over the legal limit under the Criminal Code of Canada.

West Shore RCMP continues to actively be present on the roads to make sure the public can safely celebrate the holidays.

On December 30, 2104, at approximately 0:51 AM, West Shore RCMP and View Royal Fire department received a report of burning vehicle at Integra Tire located at in View Royal. The vehicle, a silver Isuzu Rodeo was fully ablaze upon attendance.

West Shore RCMP members seized the vehicle for further examination. West Shore RCMP and View Royal Fire will work together to determine the cause of the fire.
