Report regarding the status and maintenance of Welland Legacy Park and the involvement of the Lifecycles organization.
TOWN OF VIEW ROYAL COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE REPORT
TO: Committee of the Whole DATE: June 2, 2015 FROM: Jennifer Smith, Engineering Clerk MEETING DATE: June 9, 2015
Lifecycles Update – Welland Legacy Park
RECOMMENDATION:
THAT the Committee receive the May 29, 2015 Lifecycles Update – Welland Legacy Park Report for information.
CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER'S COMMENTS:
I concur with the recommendation.
PURPOSE OF REPORT:
To provide Council with information regarding Welland Legacy Park.
Staff and Lifecycles are committed to submitting updates on an ongoing basis to inform council of the work, progress and health of the park as it pertains to the maintenance, improvements and public engagement within Welland Legacy Park and to assist with the determination of future funding.
BACKGROUND:
The orchard was established and maintained by longtime resident Rex Welland. At the time of his passing Rex asked that a large section of his home orchard be put into a land trust with the Land Conservancy, and his property bequeathed to the Town of View propagation techniques, seasonal fruit care, pruning, and organic pest management in fruit orchards.
In future, with Town support, Lifecycles envisions the addition of a school workshop to discuss the history and future of orchards in View Royal, tree biology and ecology, wildlife habitat and trees and tree appreciation and stewardship.
RECOMMENDATION:
THAT the Committee receive the May 29, 2015 Lifecycles Update – Welland Legacy Park Report for information.
