Project Summary: GPS Unit Replacement
A project to replace an outdated GPS unit with a more accurate model for municipal asset field pickups.
Project Summary
Project Name: GPS Unit Replacement Priority: Strategic Public Engagement: Not applicable Reference Number: 2-2-13104-590 CC1296 Submitted by: Darryl Woodley Director: Ivan Leung, Sewer
Executive Summary
The GPS unit that staff currently use is outdated with software no longer supported (it was purchased over 15 years ago). The replacement of this unit is required to at minimum maintain existing levels of service in the maintenance of the Town's sanitary sewer and drainage infrastructure.
Business problem and opportunity
GPS units are used to provide field pickups of Town infrastructure, which is important work in improving and updating asset information. The age and technology of the current GPS unit is inaccurate to today's best practice standards and will be unreliable without software support.
Staff recommend the purchase of a GPS unit accurate to one centimeter: a reliable standard for municipal asset field pickups. Doing so will not only provide reliable information in house (without the need of contracted surveys for small work): it will also reduce costs associated with sanitary sewer and drainage master planning. The asset may also be of benefit for parks playground planning.
Proposed project objectives
To replace an asset that no longer has software support. Provide quick, accurate field pickup of surface features for our GIS system.
Business risks
The current GPS unit we have is unstable, not very accurate and at the end of its hardware and software support.
