Details of Your Organization's Grant Request
1) Nature and goals of the project, program or event: Lyngby's sedge communities have all but disappeared in the Portage Inlet (PI) (and indeed Southern Vancouver Island) in large part due to hyperabundant, non-migrating, hybridized, resident Canada geese introduced in the early 1900's. A population of over 200 geese frequents Hospital Creek and Craigflower Estuaries wreaking havoc on marsh ecosystems. We propose to replant areas where sedge has been overgrazed and extirpated and protecting these plantings with the use of ecocultural willow waddle fencing (tried and tested natural material technique) to selectively exclude the geese from grazing from planted areas. The areas will be able to reestablish, with sedge which effectively reestablish marsh plains, restoring critical salmon habitats, blue carbon stocks, and other ecosystem services. We will work with staff within the Craigflower Creek Master Plan to implement this treatment as part of the plan's invasive species goals as well as members of the Songhees and Esquimalt Marine Stewardship teams. We will install fencing protecting 2000 m^2 in the late summer of 2023 and plant in early spring of 2024 engaging volunteers and residents in this work and education/outreach initiatives.
2) Summary of direct and indirect benefits to the Town of View Royal: The Town of View Royal has a commitment to sustainability, and a mission to achieve a resilient vibrant community that balances social and environmental objectives and well-being. The VR community plan recognizes the impacts of climate change and aims to mitigate them through environmental protection. As well, the unique environments within VR, in particular the Gorge Waterway and Portage Inlet, provide the community a variety of natural amenities for recreation. Ultimately, this project will help VR achieve their environmental and ecological objectives enhance recreational opportunities and provide adaptation from climate change impacts This project is in line with regional climate and goose control strategies, and is within the goals of the Craigflower View Royal Park Master Plan.
