Proposal details for installing bike lanes and sidewalks on Admirals Road.

Admirals Road from Island Highway to Hallowell RoadProposed for 2024 implementationHigh priority item

COUNCIL INITIATIVE

SUBMITTED BY MAYOR/COUNCILLOR

JOHN ROGERS_____________

PROJECT NAME

ADMIRALS ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION PROJECT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Design / install unidirectional bike lane / widened sidewalk / bus stop. Long overdue as we have seen many double lane roads go down to one for pedestrian, cycling and transit improvements.

Cycling concrete barriers are costly to purchase, install and maintain. Maintenance sweeping of rocks, debris and leaves requires personnel and specialized equipment. Also show to be safety hazards for motorists and cyclists creating unexpected liability for the municipality.

PROJECT LOCATION

Admirals Road from Island Highway to Hallowell Road on WEST side

ANTICIPATED COST (IF KNOWN)

View Royal commit to HALF from casino and gas taxes

PREFERRED YEAR OF IMPLEMENTATION

Design in 2024. So, it is “shelf ready” for immediate senior government grant funding opportunities.

REQUEST FOR FURTHER PUBLIC CONSULTATION / COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Canvas Saanich, Esquimalt, First Nations, local businesses and CRD for grant funding support

PRIORITY (HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW)

HIGH. The plan describes this as a “short term critical area”.

View Royal is the “missing link” for bike lane serving Saanich and Esquimalt. Active transportations serves both residents, businesses and shoppers. #40 bus serves 3 municipalities and 2 First Nations.
