COUNCIL INITIATIVE - SIX MILE OFF LEASH DOG AREA
Proposal for a central off-leash dog park in the Six Mile / Chilco / Atkins area.
COUNCIL INITIATIVE
SUBMITTED BY MAYOR/COUNCILLOR: JOHN ROGERS
PROJECT NAME
SIX MILE OFF LEASH DOG AREA
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The public rejected the staff recommendation for off leash area as part of Chilco Park. Unfortunately, that was the ONLY option provided but there are four other possible locations. Task still outstanding.
Thetis Lake is too far for Atkins, bottom of Six Mile, and top of Chilco. Active Transportation criteria recommends that such amenities should be convenient to walk and not rely on car rides. Buses and cycling aren’t for every dog.
Many residents have a consensus of the best location. Flat, easy, town owned, inexpensive to install, central.
PROJECT LOCATION
Six Mile / Chilco / Atkins area with over 1000 residents and many dogs
ANTICIPATED COST (IF KNOWN)
$50k…. fencing, dog bags, benches, trash can
PREFERRED YEAR OF IMPLEMENTATION
2025
