A COMMUNITY LEARNING ORCHARD

Where people can learn to live and eat more sustainably, steward the Urban Orchard, and learn the tangible skills to make our communities stronger.

Our program provides youth, adults, and seniors with engaging, hands-on learning experiences centred around the themes of climate resiliency and food literacy.

COMMUNITY

  • We had over 300 people attend organized activities in the last year.
  • In 2021 and 2022, we held nearly 40 volunteer work parties contributing over 300 hours of their time.
  • We held a Welland Orchard day where 75 folks came by to have a tour, taste test and compare our apple varieties and get tree care advice.

EDUCATION

This past year we offered:

  • 7 outdoor workshops with over 65 participants, learning about pruning, grafting, pest management and printmaking
  • 8 orchard field trips with some participating in apple pressing workshops

RECENT ORCHARD IMPROVEMENTS

  • Replaced fences
  • Fortified our compost area
  • Added a stone-work border to the native pollinator garden and re-planted with the help of a BC Hydro grant
