Tree Management Plan

Project: 221 Atkins Rd, View Royal, BC Title: Tree Management Plan for Sub-division & Site Servicing Project No: 20-005 Date: April 27, 2020 Scale: 1:250 Drawn By: JG Sheet No: T-1 Company: Gye & Associates Ltd.

Tree Protection Fencing Detail

Modular steel panel fencing is recommended in order to reduce land-fill waste post-construction. Fencing panels shall be secured to the ground with rebar wired to panel frame.

16 x 24” all-weather signage will be attached with the following wording:

  • For protected trees: DO NOT ENTER – Tree Protection Zone
  • For replacement/landscape tree planting sites: DO NOT ENTER – Future Tree Planting Zone

In cases where steel-panel fencing is not practical or available, fencing shall be constructed with a wooden 2x4 frame (side, top and bottom rails) and back-bracing supports as required to ensure robust placement. Snow-fencing will then be affixed to the frame using battens, zip-ties, staples, wire or nails.

TREE PRESERVATION MEASURES

Page 182
  1. Pre-construction meeting: Before demolition or site servicing begins, the contractor will meet with the arborist to review the placement of fencing and other tree protection measures which include:
    • a) The Project Arborist shall clearly mark the boundaries of all TPAs to be fenced and protected.
    • b) Access routes and areas for parking and materials storage will be identified with the contractor.
  2. Tree Fencing:
    • a) Protective tree fencing shall be installed to the Town of View Royal standards at the locations indicated on this drawing prior to demolition or site servicing permits being issued (see fencing detail on plan).
    • b) Tree protection fencing and armouring shall be maintained in good condition throughout construction and may only be moved under arborist supervision. Any breach in tree fencing must be reviewed by the project arborist for approval.
  3. Tree Management Plan posting:
    • a) At least one (1) large format copy of this tree plan shall be posted in plain sight on the site office.
    • b) The general contractor shall ensure that all relevant sub-trades are aware of the location and intent of TPAs.
  4. Site servicing and excavations: The project arborist shall be present to oversee excavations for site servicing and/or any other site grading or blasting within, or adjacent to, the tree protection areas (TPAs).
  5. Root & branch pruning and protection:
    • a) Any tree roots or branches damaged during site work shall be pruned back to undamaged tissue by the arborist.
    • b) The vertical face of excavated cuts adjacent to the TPAs shall be lined with heavy plastic or geotextile fabric by the project arborist to prevent soil desiccation and erosion.
  6. Mulch & irrigation: Trees impacted by excavation for site servicing shall have the TPAs mulched with 3-4" of wood chips or composted bark mulch and receive adequate irrigation every two weeks during the dry summer period (May to mid-October) to a depth of 12" within the TPAs.
  7. Temporary access: If temporary access is required within a tree protection zone (TPA), the contractor shall notify the project arborist in advance and review the access requirements and any additional soil protection measures required.
  8. Soil armouring: If it is not possible to fence the entire PRZ, the exposed portion of the PRZ shall be protected with 3/4" plywood or a temporary cover of geotextile and 200mm of road-base, woodchips, or mulch, as specified by the arborist based on recommended soil armouring details.
  9. Materials storage: No equipment, materials or excavated soil shall be placed or stored within the TPA.
  10. Blasting and rock removal near root zones:
    • a) The general contractor will convene a meeting with the arborist and blasting contractor to review the blasting work plan that minimizes rock removal impacts to protected trees.
    • b) Where considered necessary by the arborist, alternate rock removal techniques, such as hoe-ramming, shall be used in place of blasting.
    • c) Blasting vibrations in the vicinity of the Tree Protection Areas are not to exceed a measured peak particle velocity of 25 mm/sec.
      • i) Seismometer records will be kept of all blasting within a 30m radius of any tree protection areas for review by the project arborist.
      • ii) Seismometers shall be placed at the outer boundary of the tree protection area nearest the blast.
    • d) Use DYNAMEE as the explosive product, no fertilizer-based explosive is permitted, due to its toxicity to tree roots.
    • e) The contractor will erect shielding to protect trees from rock debris from the blast site from entering the TPAs.
