Site Features and Notes
- Island Hwy Boundary: Arcs of Columnar Rowan/European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia 'Cardinal Royal' - Scotland's second national tree) soften the building elevation and frame views toward Craigflower Manor.
- North Boundary: Evergreen hedging (Waxleaf Privet, Ligustrum japonicum 'Texanum') and Shore Pine (Pinus contorta var. contorta) provide screening for neighbors.
- Craigflower Manor Access: Includes a new crushed aggregate pathway, interpretive signage, and an accessible sloped path.
- Courtyard and Entrance: Features a unit paver patio, amphitheatre seatwalls, and an outdoor event space. Groundcover planting beds with heathers, grasses, and small evergreen shrubs frame the entrance.
- Water Management:
- Turf surfaced rock pit in the building entrance courtyard for roof rainwater infiltration.
- Roof water raingarden with dwarf willows, redtwig dogwood, wax myrtle, and ornamental grasses.
- Rain gardens with native grasses, bracken fern, shrubs, and Vine Maple (Acer circinatum).
- Grass swale for drainage from the parking area.
- Parking Area: Screened by Garry Oak and Shore Pine. Curb inlets acting as wheelstops allow drainage into the swale.
- Admirals Road Boundary: Includes Garry Oak (Quercus garryana) and Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) to screen the loading dock.
- Tree Removal and Health:
- Several Birches (720, 721, 722, 723) removed due to construction impacts and poor health.
- Birches (730, 729) removed due to poor health.
- European Mountain Ash/Rowan trees (4) used to infill gaps from Birch removals.
