Subject: Pilot Test 80 Atkins
Elena,
Please add to discussion of 80 Atkins Staff report today. I urge Council to take up Staff's suggestion to pilot the 80 Atkins space as an off leash area... with implementation in 2025.
Please see attached concept drawing.
- there could be space for 4-5 cars for off leash use
- opportunity to do like 6 Mile road and add 70 m of parking along Atkins Road... space for about 14 cars. Mockup shown.
- This space is about 1/3 of Chilco Park... the size recommended by staff in 2021
- Like Chilco, do not mix children and dogs unless divided by fencing. Remember: Chilco is an ON LEASH park.
- unlike playground, infrastructure requirements are minimal.
The # of dogs in the Atkins / Six Mile / Nursery Hill / Dameon area probably equal to or exceed # of children. Most dwellings are condo / apartments where dogs do NOT have a yard to exercise or play in.
The 2017 Parks Master Plan ALREADY recognizes the importance of off leash areas. ASK, when was the last off leash space created? 10 -20 years ago? NO NEED to wait for Park Master Plan review!!
This pilot recognizes half of the Nursery Hill residents request... and what whole area asked for in 2018-19. Nursery Hill residents are concerned that Chilco Park gets $190k upgrades in 2026 and they get nothing on their side.
Thanks.
John
