Chiefs Comments:
As we conclude another year, I note that 2016 was the busiest year in the department’s 70 year history for calls for service. Of note as well, the number of volunteer hours dedicated to training, response and overnight staffing of the station. As usual, I am very proud of the efforts of staff and the volunteer firefighters for their continued dedication in delivering a top tier fire protection service to the Towns residents.
Along with Fire and Rescue Services, Building and Bylaw Departments had a very busy year. Bylaw received nearly 700 complaints and actioned 363 of those complaints. Notice was sent to CRD that the Town would be reviewing in detail the contract for animal control services for 2017 and beyond. A review of the service concluded contractual obligations were not being met under the current terms. The review of the contract and negotiations will begin in early 2017.
With the implementation of legislation outlining requirements for training and qualifications of firefighters, significant changes have been made to the departments Training Division. These new requirements have made it necessary to offer and conduct additional evening and weekend training sessions so volunteers can achieve prescribed requirements within mandated time frames. Currently the department is at full complement with 37 total members.
