Details of Your Organization's Grant Request
1) Nature and goals of the project, program or event:
Our education initiatives continue to expand in response to a clear community demand for free, hands-on, place-based environmental learning opportunities. Peninsula Streams Society's Education Programs, delivered by dedicated staff and volunteers, focus on streams and shoreline ecosystems, habitat conservation, the salmon life cycle, and watershed & stormwater systems. To reduce barriers, all programs are offered free of cost to public schools. Students actively participate in environmental stewardship, monitoring, and restoration through meaningful, real-world activities such as invasive plant removal, storm drain marking, rain garden design and planting, beach cleanups, forage fish surveys, and water quality monitoring. These immersive experiences help students connect classroom learning to the ecosystems in their own communities.
Core components of our Environmental Education programs include:
- Streamside Education (all grades)
- Watershed & Salmon Education (Grades 3–4)
- Shoreline Education (Grades 5+)
- Creatures of Habitat (Grades 6–7)
- Rains, Drains & Gardens (Grades 5+)
Our Environmental Education programs are designed to engage, inform, and empower the next generation of environmental stewards while fostering strong, lasting connections between youth and the vibrant natural systems that surround them. By strengthening youth engagement, supporting local schools, and fostering environmental resilience within the community, Peninsula Streams & Shorelines' Environmental Education programs provide meaningful direct and long term benefits to the Town of View Royal.
In recent years, Peninsula Streams Society has delivered Watershed and Salmon Life Cycle education programs to View Royal Elementary and Eagle View Elementary, as well as Shoreline and Streamside education programs to Shoreline Middle School. Through these programs, PSS staff provided students with firsthand experiences exploring the species that inhabit the waters of Portage Inlet and the Millstream estuary. Students learned about local salmon, forage fish, and other aquatic life, the environmental pressures these ecosystems face, and the practical actions they can take to help protect and restore them. Support from the Town of View Royal will strengthen our ability to continue delivering high quality, place-based environmental education that connects students directly to their local waterways and empowers them to become informed, engaged stewards of their community's natural assets.
2) Summary of direct and indirect benefits to the Town of View Royal:
Our programs play a vital role in strengthening the community by delivering essential support to public schools and teachers across our region. Many educators are working hard to provide meaningful learning experiences despite limited resources and growing classroom demands. With municipal support, we are able to enhance and modernize our programs so they align with curriculum standards, actively engage students, and are accessible and easy for schools to implement. We offer programming across a diverse range of subjects, including biology, botany, geography, hydrology, civil engineering, Indigenous Studies, and geology. Through these topics, students gain the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and environmental awareness needed to become informed and engaged citizens. By investing in education, we help cultivate communities that make stronger environmental decisions, demonstrate greater long-term resilience, and show increased participation in environmental volunteerism and philanthropy.
Direct Benefits Our programs deliver curriculum aligned, hands-on environmental education to local students, reducing pressure on teachers who face limited time and resources. With municipal support, we ensure programming is accessible, engaging, and rooted in View Royal's local ecosystems, including streams, shorelines, wetlands, and parks within the municipality. Students gain practical knowledge in biology, hydrology, geography, civil engineering, Indigenous Studies, geology, and climate resilience. Through outdoor field experiences, restoration activities, and community science monitoring, youth develop critical thinking skills and environmental literacy while actively contributing to the health of local natural areas. Programming also supports municipal priorities by:
- Increasing awareness of stormwater management and watershed health
- Encouraging stewardship of parks and green spaces
- Supporting biodiversity and habitat protection goals
- Reinforcing asset management through understanding natural infrastructure
Indirect and Long Term Benefits By building emotional connection to place at a young age, students develop a lasting sense of belonging and responsibility toward View Royal’s natural areas. Youth who grow up understanding their local watersheds are more likely to become environmentally aware adults who support sustainable policies, volunteer in community initiatives, and contribute to long term resilience. Over time, this leads to:
- Increased environmental volunteerism and community stewardship
- Stronger public support for municipal sustainability initiatives
- Reduced vandalism and improved care for parks and natural assets
- Improved mental and physical wellbeing linked to nature connection
- A future workforce that understands green infrastructure and climate adaptation Investing in environmental education today helps cultivate a community that makes informed environmental decisions, demonstrates resilience in the face of climate change, and actively participates in protecting the natural systems that sustain View Royal.
