Detailed Planting Plan for 233 Anya Lane

Planting area: 230 square metre area of floodplain at the toe of an engineered slope featuring native riparian shrub thicket plantings covering about 70 percent of the total area (115 square metres).

Please see attached map that illustrates the planting area in the orange polygon. Note that planting is at least five metres from the existing trail, and does not displace existing habitat features as noted on the second map. The attached image visualizes the planting after establishment, and shows modest plant heights with no screening of views currently enjoyed by adjacent landowners. The entire planting area is located within a natural state covenant. Species will be distributed onsite according to surface elevation and micro-site conditions.

Stocking list: total of 130 nursery-grown 1-2 gallon containers at a density averaging one per square metre of planted area:

HAT will obtain planting stock from Russell Nursery. Species include typical riparian shrubs and groundcovers native to the region. Follow up irrigation in year 2 and 3 in mid to late summer by landowner will ensure an acceptable survival rate.

The objective of planting this former farm field with community volunteers is to complement the restoration of the Township's streamside park. The desired visual effect is a natural thicket suitable for nesting birds, and a more enjoyable nature experience for trail users.

The planting day will be a demonstration event with a model story that can be broadcast to the greater community. This will also be an opportunity to share other initiatives by View Royal that enhance Millstream's natural areas. If you can provide a parks person for that day (March 3rd), we will provide volunteers to assist with some activity such as broom removal in the park area while the planting occurs.
