6. BUSINESS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES

a) Update on Path from Welland Legacy Park to the Galloping Goose Trail

The Parks Supervisor noted that there is a mock-up of the trail from Welland Legacy Park to the Galloping Goose Trail with details needing to be discussed with the Capital Regional District (CRD); and Life Cycles preparing the design for the trail.

The Committee requested that there be a site visit and be given updates as to the status of the trail. An invitation will be sent to Life Cycles by staff requesting a presentation at the November meeting.

a) Continuation of Joint Meeting – Advisory Committee Restructuring and Revitalizing Workshop

The Committee discussed the structure of the Parks, Recreation and Environment Advisory Committee (PREAC) as follows:

  • satisfied with the current structure of the Committee;
  • engage volunteers more;
  • social development being a PREAC mandate;
  • value in progress made; and
  • small budget to work with.

b) Craigflower Manor Community Gardens

The Committee discussed the closing of the Craigflower Manor community gardens.

c) Parks and Trails Map Update

The Parks Supervisor noted that the Parks and Trails Map will be going to print very soon.

d) Eagle Creek Park

The Committee discussed the Eagle Creek Development in regard to the future trail from Watkiss Way to Little Road in Saanich. This trail and park will be developed in phase two of the project.

e) Fence Along the E & N Rail Trail

The Committee discussed the fencing along the E & N Rail Trail; staff noted that the CRD has jurisdiction and that the railway is considered active. The Committee also discussed the tunnel underpass between the two sections of Portage Park.

PREAC-03-14 THAT the Committee recommend to Council that consideration be made in the 2015 budget for the Portage Park tunnel connection underneath the E&N Railway and Trail to be upgraded to a useable access for connection to two sides of the park. CARRIED

f) Portage Park Playground

The Committee discussed the future playground equipment for Portage Park. The Parks Supervisor and J. Jakobsen will meet and discuss possible equipment selection.
