Good morning Mayor and Council,

I'm writing to you with respect to the wayfinding signage motion for consideration this evening.

I think this is a fantastic idea and is in alignment with the hopes and aspirations of the Town for parks use.

I write in my role as Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Environment Advisory Committee with a concern that a step is missing in the process.

At our previous meeting where this project was under consideration, members of the advisory committee supported the sign typology, with an understanding that the content of the signage would be brought back to the committee for input.

Of interest at the committee was an interest in reaching out to the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations to engage in determining traditional Lekwungen names on these signs for areas of significance to the Nations. Staff confirmed with the committee, and it was my understanding, that this subject would return to us for discussion, as well as other content. The committee was explicitly told by staff that we were not to consider content, just form and typology, hence the specific mention in the motion of support from the committed, which you can find below:

THAT the Parks, Recreation and Environment Advisory Committee supports the sign typology as presented by the Community Planner for View Royal Parks Wayfinding system.

I appreciate that this is before council this evening for consideration, but my hope is that, given the commitment to come back to PREAC for further engagement, if the motion passes this evening that PREAC can be further consulted on the general content on the signs.

I don't believe the committee is inclined to go very detailed, but I did hear interest in discussing or having an opportunity to engage on content for wayfinding signage.

Thank you for considering. I have copied members of the PREAC committee for their information as well.
