Re: Development Permit with Variances 2022/05 - 1519 Admirals Road (Canadian Tire)
Greetings Mayor, Council and View Royal Staff,
As Canadian Tire is a very highly valued business partner for the Town of View Royal and its residents, we see an exciting opportunity here to create a placemaking hub as part of their renovation project.
We are extremely pleased to see that the installation of two Level 2 EV charging stations has been factored into the plans. Would it be too much to ask of Canadian Tire to consider putting in the first and only DC fast charger in View Royal? One of our rationales is that it would be quite the draw and they could recoup a lot of the costs through rebates and by charging for its use. Still way cheaper than filling up with gas!!
A fast charger would encourage EV drivers to choose Canadian Tire for shopping, if they need a fast charge to return up island. As infrastructure is already being installed, this would be an ideal time to pre-wire and rough in the necessary conduits while awaiting some of those generous rebates available (refer to resources at the bottom of the letter). Hopefully the Town could also go to bat for the Canadian Tire location with the CRD and ask them to chip in as they are currently determining EV Charger locations.
To complement this, it would be wonderful to have a little coffee shop with outside seating shaded by a grove of trees (especially cooling in the heat of summer) that customers could use while waiting for repairs or for their car to charge. This grove of trees would help towards the required replacement trees for those trees slated to be removed.
Just noticed that in the proposed landscaping, there are plans for a pergola to be erected in the former green space area, providing opportunity for on-site social space. Perfect place to twin it with a coffee shop here! Perhaps a small pollinator garden could even be situated nearby featuring some of Canadian Tire’s many beautiful flowers they have on offer. Colourful flowers always make a place more inviting. The coffee shop could become a real feature and be decorated seasonally with all of Canadian Tire's own products. That adjacent bike rack would work really well here and attract cyclists to this hub too. A water fountain here for both humans and dogs would also be a nice touch for their customers.
Public art might also be considered or even a sign board where residents could pin notices for local events (similar to what Thrifty’s has) or even for Canadian Tire to post a regular blog with seasonal tips for what to plant and how.
We need more places in View Royal where residents can gather and build a sense of community and it would be wonderful to have Canadian Tire be a part of that vision.
