Details of Your Organization’s Grant Request
1) Nature and goals of the project, program or event: An average of 53% of people in Canada currently live paycheque to paycheque and especially in the CRD where cost of living is high, many face economic and logistical barriers to accessing fresh, nutritious food. FED plans to response to this food security crisis in Spring 2023 by continuing out My FED Farm project for a fourth year. Through My FED Farm, we provide food growing kits to vulnerable households and community groups that support underserved populations, including individuals living in low-income households, seniors centers, immunocompromised households individuals with disabilities, single parent households, and First Nations communities. So far, 3866 planters and 95,880 seed packets and plant starts have been provided through this project, adding 22,024lb of potential food grown by and for vulnerable populations.
2) Summary of direct and indirect benefits to the Town of View Royal: The grant will be used to cover the hard costs for approximately 25 My FED Farm planters for households of community partners in View Royal, depending on program registration. Remaining funds will be used to cover the cost of soil, seeds, plant starts and educational materials. By providing 25 planters to View Royal we will be adding 120 lb of food growing capacity to community residents and organizations. This will increase food security for vulnerable individuals that face barriers to accessing healthy and affordable food. Furthermore, the kits ease the financial strain of buying fresh food, allow people to grow culturally appropriate food for themselves, and provide some insulation from supply chain volatility. Gardening also provides a valuable hands-on learning opportunity for everyone, including families with young children and opens up opportunities for intergenerational learning and connection.
