RE: Annual request for West Shore Detachment – Community Initiatives/Employee Funding 2025
Each year the Town of View Royal generously provides funding to the West Shore RCMP Detachment Community Policing Section and the staff of the West Shore Detachment. The success of our Community Policing Unit and its programs along with the mental wellbeing of our staff depends on this money. We are grateful for your support, especially given the policing climate of recent years
Below is a brief explanation of our programs and initiatives; separated by specific requests.
Community Initiatives Budget Request: $6,128
The Community Policing Section (CPS) is currently comprised of 3 full time Constable, 1 full time Corporal, a First Nations Police Officer, 1 Section Clerk and over 20 volunteers. CPS is actively engaged in a number of Community based programs along with our volunteers as well as being committed to our 29 local schools in a liaison role. We have recently connected with and are working alongside a youth social worker engaging with youth and students. This project allows for increased interaction within our schools and amongst our more at-risk youth. CPS is further involved in numerous educational and awareness programs; other youth engagement initiatives; community events; and presentations initiated by our Community.
West Shore Staff Mental Support: $2,656
As an operational Detachment that provides 24/7 policing in a growing and diverse community, our staff (both police officers and administrative staff) are exposed to high-stress and emotionally challenging work. The continued efficiency of our Detachment and policing services depends on our staff and as such, we are dedicated to their mental health and well-being; especially given the current policing climate. This funding is focused on our employee’s mental health, providing services to staff such as fitness and self-improvement classes; providing a ‘safe’ space within the Detachment where individuals may go to decompress and debrief; and/or bringing in experts to educate on tools and practices to assist our staff in managing their overall health.
West Shore Staff Support: $1,808
The West Shore Detachment is comprised of several categories of employees all working in their respective units and sections, and all with various schedules and mandates. We value the opportunity for our staff to participate in team building exercises and staff development activities. There are great benefits to meetings and holiday celebrations that allow our staff to both meet each other and develop working relationships outside of the fast-paced and high stress normal workday.
Total Request: $10,592
Your continued financial donations to our programs and employees provide essential support to the operation and maintenance of the West Shore communities, schools and volunteer-based programs in addition to the well-being of our staff.
