  • Accessible BC Act (2021) includes standards for 8 key areas:
    • employment
    • delivery of services
    • the built environment
    • information and communications
    • transportation
    • health
    • education
    • procurement
  • Over 750 organizations in BC are required to have a plan, a committee, and a feedback tool
  • Plan to identify, remove and prevent barriers to individuals in or interacting with the organization

  • July 2023, Council approved participation in Capital West Accessibility Advisory Committee with partnering municipalities & decision to focus on employment and service delivery
  • CWAAC met 5 times (City of Langford hosted 1st year)
  • 2 surveys conducted:
    • 1st on public engagement
    • 2nd on identification of barriers to municipal employment and service delivery
  • Changing Paces, a consulting firm with lived experience, hired to conduct 7 engagement sessions and create a report

  • The draft Plan describes: What We’ve Done, What We’re Doing and What We May Explore
  • These 3 areas further considered under:
    • staff and/or Council training
    • technological
    • physical space
    • policy, procedure and plans
  • The Accessibility Plan will serve as a tool for accessibility-related employment and service delivery improvements in the Town towards the goal of becoming a barrier-free community
  • Over time, Plan updates (every 3 years) will consider the Act’s other accessibility standards
  • CWAAC partners proceeding similarly for the Plan format and timeline

Recruitment in process for the 2025 CWAAC transition to being comprised of community members, with each of the partnering municipalities appointing a representative
