About Songhees Nation

We are the Songhees Nation of the Lək̓ʷəŋən People.

We are from the Lekwungen Nation, often called the Songhees. For time immemorial we have been the first peoples of what now is known as the southern part of Vancouver Island. Living in harmony with the world around us, our actions have always been approached with respect.

"We're laying the foundation for the social, cultural, and economic well-being for our people." -Chief Robert Sam

About the South Island Powwow

September 30th marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The annual South Island Powwow is an opportunity to recognize Survivors and their families in the spirit of reconciliation. Through song dance, and education, we will celebrate traditional Indigenous cultures and resiliency.

Local First Nations, along with Nations from the Mainland, have been welcomed to join us on this day to celebrate in our time-honoured Powwow.

Two successful events now have been hosted by the Songhees Nation beginning in 2022. In 2022, the Powwow brought 10,000, and in 2023, 17,000 people together to witness Indigenous resiliency to stand together on Orange Shirt Day.

Event Goals

  1. HONOUR AND RECOGNIZE SURVIVORS To hold space for our residential school, day school, and 60s scoop Survivors and their families.
  2. CELEBRATE INDIGENOUS CULTURES To celebrate the cultures that colonization tried to erase, and showcase our strength and resilience.
  3. REMINDER OF VALUES To bring together people in a time of celebration and to build bridges amongst all Nations.
  4. PROVIDE A SAFE SPACE FOR ALL TO PAY RESEPCTS Provide a safe and inclusive space for Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike to pay respect for National Day for Truth and Reconcilliation.
