Letter from L. Pakos, Re: Sidewalk on Glenairlie Drive

Correspondence from a local resident requesting budget allocation to complete a sidewalk on Glenairlie Drive for student safety.

1 CALL TO ORDER- Mayor Tobias called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Mayor and Council

I am attaching pictures of the area along Glenairlie Drive from the sidewalk in front of the house at the bottom of Stormont to the far gate of View Royal Elementary that comes out on Glenairlie Drive.

This area is used for travel to and from View Royal Elementary both before and after school. A large number of parents and children come from the upper portion of Glenairlie Drive and have to walk on the other side of the road as there is no where to walk. As parents picking up their children from school park on the street, walkers have to walk around cars. A sidewalk would stop that from happening. Because of the overgrown state that this area is in all parents and children have to use the road area to walk. This area is usually cut down (for about a couple of feet) once a year.

As the adjacent part of the school yard is the farthest away from the school it does not always receive the amount of supervision that the other areas do. With the overgrown undergrowth it would be easy pickings for anyone with nefarious intentions to attack a child. From my sundeck I can watch this area but not when it is overgrown. We have already had one suspicious incident at the gate in the past.

I am asking for your consideration in adding to an upcoming budget, for completing the sidewalk from the top of Glenairlie where the sidewalk ends to the gate. This would be a safety issue in a number of areas and would be appreciated by both residents walking up the hill and parents and children walking their children to and from school.

Thanks for your consideration.

Linda Pakos
