Good day all;
We are citizens that owns and lives at 333 Stewart Avenue, in View Royal, BC.
We have reviewed the council agenda for this upcoming meeting in early May, 2023. We read the information that was outlined comparing other municipalities to View Royal. We would like to share with you some concerns we have regarding the analysis of the collection service timing and costs. There were only a couple of sentences suggesting that if council wanted to consider changing to bi-weekly collection, they would have to break the contract. There was no financial information around what the bi-weekly collection would be and no information on what the financial penalty might be as part of this. For council and citizens to truly understand the financial impacts they should have all of the information.
In addition, there is apparently an immediate need to resolve and accept the price increase suggested by May 15, 2023. Why is this only allowing 2 weeks to resolve?
Given our goal to reuse, reduce and recycle to assist with combating climate change and our necessity as citizens to be apart of this, there should be a very strong conviction to reduce collection service to bi-weekly. This could do a few things:
- reduce the cost to View Royal citizens;
- reduce our collective carbon footprint through reduce truck emissions; and
- encourage citizens to reduce their consumption/disposal and if not pay for their part in the extra need.
We did submit my recommendation to consider bi-weekly collection over a year ago, but was told that the contract was already signed with the collection company. I’m not sure why this was not considered before the contract was signed, given every other municipality we were compared to, except for Sidney, are using bi-weekly collection with stickers for extra use.
