Dear Mayor & Council:
Re: Response letter from Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure (MOTI) regarding Municipal Speed Limits
The Township of Esquimalt received a letter, dated June 13, 2023, from the Minister of Transportation & Infrastructure (MOTI) in response to our February 27, 2023, letter regarding Municipal Speed Limits. A request for consideration was submitted to the province to empower municipalities to change default speed limits on streets within their respective jurisdictions. Please see the attached letter from MOTI for specific information on MOTI’s commitment to supporting road safety and a potential way to mitigate municipal costs.
At the June 19, 2023 Township of Esquimalt Council Meeting, Esquimalt Council approved reducing speed limits on Major Roads to 40km/hr, and all other roads to 30km/hr. The Township will install speed limit signs over a multi-year period starting with Major Roads and gateway signs in 2023.
