Proposed Site C Dam Project

A motion to View Royal Municipal Council by the View Royal Chapter of the Dogwood Initiative

Whereas the Site C Dam is anticipated to have a capital cost of at least $7 billion, and the costs of construction will result in an increase of electricity costs for BC Hydro customers, and

Whereas the rising cost of electricity rates will negatively impact many View Royal residents, and

Whereas the Joint Review Panel's acceptance of the Site C Dam proposal was accompanied by a recommendation that the project's economic impacts and benefits be assessed by the BC Utilities Commission;

Therefore be it resolved THAT the Council of the Township of View Royal write a letter to the Hon. Bill Bennett, Minister of Energy and Mines, urging a one year delay in Site C Dam construction to allow the BC Utilities Commission sufficient time to ensure that the project's economic benefits will outweigh the costs to BC Hydro customers of current and future generations, and urging a further review of the economic impacts, capital and lifecycle operating costs, including non-financial costs in the form of social and environmental impact.
