Correspondence: Letter from Cornerstone Properties Ltd.

Dear Council Members:

I am writing on behalf of the owners at 121 Aldersmith Place, Victoria BC.

We received a complaint of a foul smell that was finally identified as coming from a load of mushroom manure in the Trio property. The complaint described the event as follows:

On Thursday June 4th, the Trio Landscaping Company just south of us, took in a huge load of mushroom manure.

The smell and fumes wafted up the street and permeated our building. We called the fire department because we didn't know what it was; smelt like natural gas. Turns out they were already trying to address the issue. They were at Admirals Walk. I went down to speak with them with my concern about the fumes.

The odour and fumes made people here feel light headed and nauseated – especially those of us on the ground floor. I arranged for the fire department to bring a fan, open the roof and to blow out the fumes and even then, the fumes were still in the hallway. (It is difficult because there is no way to vent each floor.)

What happened is really unacceptable, and unhealthy.

So, I think we should write a letter to View Royal. This practice is inconsistent with Trio's image of being a responsible corporate citizen.

We would ask council to consider some regulation that would prevent the transfer of noxious odours and dust particles that can be a health hazard to residents of this municipality. We have bylaws that restrict smoking for example near building entrances and open windows. Surely there can be something that can control odours of this magnitude if they can do it for cigarettes. Both can be a significant health hazard.

We would appreciate a response from council at your earliest opportunity before this happens again.
