Dear Mr. Screech,

This letter is written in response to Council’s meeting on dated May 19, 2015, in which council asked to do the following due diligence activities in order to prevent the rodents entering into the attic space:

  1. Changing the vents
  2. Installation of barriers
  3. Pruning
  4. Eradication of rodents

There are still rodents in the attic space in spite of doing all of the above suggested activities. Please see attached pictures. In order to stop rodents, we need to cut down the access to the roof which can only be achieved by removing the tree. Industry experts have provided the same opinion including Town of View Royal's subject matter experts. Please see attached reports.

The bigger issue is that the tree is too close to the building foundation and structure. During last week’s winter storm, big branches fell over the roof and we have to call the roofer right away. The branches could fall over the residents of the building. Please be aware that overtime, tree roots will start pushing the building foundation, eventually damaging the whole structure of the house.

As a Development Manager and a Profession Engineer in the Province of BC, I know how important it is to protect our habitat. To minimize the impact on our ecosystem and local habitat, I agree to plant 2 oak trees in lieu of one oak tree. Further, I will work with the town if more trees are required.

Removal of one tree will not cause any harm to the ecosystem or habitat as:

  1. There are two other similar trees within 6’.
  2. There are countless trees along the property line which is 15’ away.
  3. 6 trees have already been planted within 15’ in lieu of one tree.

It’s a serious health and safety issue and as a professional, I recommend to remove only ONE tree to resolve this issue.

This a time sensitive issue and your early response will be highly appreciated.
