THETIS VALE ROAD NAMING BYLAW NO. 940

RECOMMENDATION:

THAT Council give first, second and third reading to Bylaw 940.

PURPOSE OF REPORT

To present the bylaw to rename a portion of Chilco Rd to Lund Rd, and to present Council with naming options for a road in Thetis Vale Phase 6.

ISSUES AND ANALYSIS

Lund Rd The bylaw officially names a portion of Chilco Rd to Lund Rd as per the public consultation and Council resolution on July 7, 2015. Affected residents have been sent correspondence indicating that their address will officially change to Lund on January 1, 2016 (attached to the report).

Thetis Vale Phase 6 road name As per the attached illustration, the road servicing the duplexes is partially public and partially private. Council names public streets and in practice the developer names private streets. It makes sense in this case for the street name to be the same across both segments for the sake of legibility and continuity.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION AND STREET NAMING

The comprehensive list of names to be used in the Town is attached to the report. Names directly relating to the Chilco/Thetis area are:

Goucher (Ernest) – Operator of sausage factory between Six Mile House and the C.N.R. tracks.
Greig (John) – Had a lime-burning operation near Thetis Lake.
Massey – Caretaker at Thetis Lake.

During the Chilco Rd renaming process the Town consulted with residents regarding the short list of names for streets. One of the other popular names as part of the Chilco Rd renaming was 'Massey'. Limona Construction, the developer, has indicated their support for the name through email.

A comprehensive departmental circulation of the short list of names was conducted (including Fire) and no objections to any of the names were stated. Protective services indicated a preference for Massey as it was 'easiest to pronounce'.

ALTERNATE RECOMMENDATION

That Council give an alternate name to either road, based on the list of names provided.

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council give first, second and third reading to Bylaw 940.
