Dear Mayor Hill and Council:
Thank you for your generous Grant-in-Aid of $25,000.00.
As you know, the View Royal Reading Centre is almost 70 years old. It started in 1943 with just a handful of volunteers and a few books in a tiny room below the community hall. It has since grown to over 20,000 volumes and 1,200 patrons, and it is the oldest volunteer organization in View Royal. Our 45 volunteers cater to 250 – 300 patrons every month.
What a valuable aspect of our town’s heritage!
Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have been unable to raise the necessary funds to continue this invaluable service to our community. With the funding that we have available, we will be forced to close our doors permanently on October 31, 2012.
We are continuously seeking alternative accommodations and sources of funding, with no luck so far. Our annual budget breaks down as follows:
| Expenditure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Rent | $60,000.00 |
| Insurance | $850.00 |
| Utilities (alarm, phone, internet, hydro) | $5,440.00 |
| Books | $5,000.00 |
| Supplies and misc. | $1,200.00 |
| TOTAL: | $72,490.00 |
July 30, 2012
In addition to the town’s grant, we have received the following:
| Revenue Source | Amount |
|---|---|
| Grant from Bank of Montreal | $1,100.00 |
| Grants from Scotiabank | $1,700.00 |
| Book Sales | $525.00 |
| Craft and Bake Sales | $1,200.00 |
| Patron Donations | $925.00 |
| TOTAL: | $5,450.00 |
As you can see, our income has fallen drastically short of our expenses. We have appealed to the province, the Gaming Commission, and many corporations, but to no avail. It would be a great inconvenience to this town if we should have to close. We would appreciate any assistance you could offer.
Yours Sincerely,
Doreen Jackman Chairperson View Royal Reading Centre
