That Council direct staff to write a letter to the CRD requesting deployment of post disaster potable water "drop kits" to View Royal fire hall, with training etc in 2024.
Background: CRD installed the region's first blue hydrant around 2018 at Canadian Tire. Since then two more have been connected to the region's water mains for rapid access to potable drinking water after an earthquake or other disaster. This past year CRD has now acquired equipment necessary to distribute drinking water to residents. Given the limited CRD personnel will be needed to fix broken mains etc, the region needs municipal participation for timely, effective and efficient distribution. The CRD will supply and train designated personnel be it fire fighters, engineers, and/or volunteers.
CRD needs a letter to commerce View Royal's long awaited assurance of this vital post disaster service to residents and business. Canadian Tire, VGH, Westshore Rec are the three corners of our town. These hydrants also serve Saanich, Esquimalt, Colwood as well as Songhees and Esquimalt first Nations. This is an excellent opportunity for the town / CRD to pilot the project, help test the equipment, refine manuals and training programs.
Support and approval of this letter is very timely since the matter is on the Wed Oct 18 Water Supply Commission meeting where 2024 budget will be presented and debated.
