Tree Protection Measures

  1. Canopy Clearance Pruning
  • Pruning must be completed prior to constructing Grand Fir 494 tree protection fence.
  • CJF recommends 2.5m canopy lift from current lowest branch.
  • Black hawthorn #493 prunings.
  • Grand fir #494 CJF advises whole tree safety and maintenance prune.
  • All pruning to be completed by an ISA certified arborist.
  1. Tree Protection Fencing (TPF)
  • Provide maximum and approved aeration of selected tree service contractor.
  • No entry into fenced protection zone (TPF).
  • No loading in-out.
  • Max pruning height: 50% of tree height.
  • Post brightly coloured "Tree Protection Zone" signs: permission.
  • Remove debris from project area.
  • Site supervisor must ensure fence remains in place.
  • Construct rain run off with well braced 1.2m (4') wood frame / snow fence panel tree protection fence.
  • Maintain tree protection fence in good functioning condition until landscape changes.
  • Fencing must be erected prior to any site work.
  • Construction materials / waste / concrete outwash must not be placed against / stored within protection zones.
  • TPF to be installed at edge of the critical root zone (CRZ) as identified.
  1. Temporary Machine / Materials Access
  • Place temporary bridge over critical root zone where access is required.
  • Temporary wood chip path / 80mm wood chips over woven geotextile.
  • Access for low-pressure track machines only inside root protection zone.
  1. Soil Compaction Protection
  • Use wood chip mulch layer (10-15cm) between access slopes and bottom north property line path.
  • Do not allow excavator to climb/descend slope over non-woven geotextile (Texel 350 or similar product).
  1. Excavation
  • In the following locations hand excavation with hand:
    • All proposed work within the root zone of Douglas-fir 491.
    • Proposed gabion wall construction on west side of property.
    • 4m south / west of Douglas-fir 491 35cm surface holding roots 1, 2.
    • Root pruning:
    • Flush prune exposed roots >2.5cm diameter severed or damaged beyond reasonable repair.
    • Seal exposed roots with sterile pruning compound.
    • Hand / hand pruner tools.
    • Sawzall / reckal with wood knife.

CJF Project responsibilities:

  • Discuss canopy pruning goals / practice with tree service contractor prior to commencement.
  • Layout protection fence alignment with builder at start.
  • Consult on temporary machine / materials access slope design / location.
  • Consult on woodchip soil compaction protection with contractor.
  • Oversee temporary machine / materials access slope construction.
  • Oversee excavation along:
    • Western property line between waterline and Grand fir 494.
    • Western property line within Bigleaf maple 495 8.1m PRZ.
    • 0.15m either side of Douglas-fir 491 35cm surface holding roots 1, 2.
  • Prune exposed roots >2.5cm.
  • Flush prune exposed roots.
  • Consult on location of plantable walls where these encroach toward Douglas-fir 491 36cm surface roots.
  • Remain available to other consultants, home owner and contractor team.
  • Occasionally visit site to ensure tree protection measures maintained.
  • Submit arborist letter of "successful project completion / Bylaw 1069, 2022 protected tree impact assessment report".
